One of the best ways to spend the last Sunday of the month was back this weekend at Fort Schanskop in Pretoria. The weather was uncertain at first, but it turned out to be the kind of sunny summer day that’s ideal for a picnic with some of SA’s best live music acts.

Yo Grapes at Park Acoustics by Christelle Duvenage Photography

Yo Grapes kicked things off with his unique one-man electric pop. His off-kilter lyrics about topics like holidays and dehydration, pre-made drum beats operated by foot pedal, and a lone, clean electric guitar come together to create pop songs that doesn’t beg to be sung along to, yet sticks phrases like “responsibility and ice-cream is what you need” in your head for weeks.

Next up was Vana and the Oh So Serious, a group from Pretoria who, after a few false starts and a set riddled with technical difficulties, overflowed with infectious folk music. This group of four guys, most of whom were wearing stockings, entertained with a collection of not-so-common instruments like accordion, violin and double bass. The group includes blues and country influences to blend genres in their unique, Oh So Serious way.

As folky and playful as Vana and the Oh So Serious is, Captain Stu is tight! This rock band with a serious reggae and ska influence is the perfect example of well-rehearsed, polished music. Though the technical quality of their performance is enough to commend them for, the contagious foot stomping they infected the crowd with speaks for itself.

The multi-national, multilingual Napalma, featuring familiar festival face Jaco Mans (Tidal Waves) on guitar, certainly provides a unique, crossover show featuring different sounds and various languages from across the world. Their energetic beats with touches of Brazilian, Portuguese and Funk music was surprisingly effective at getting the Afrikaans/English Pretoria-crowd moving and even singing along.

Albert Frost’s set brought the main stage proceedings to an explosive close. Using three guitars, a loop pedal, and an incomprehensible amount of skill (guitar-playing, singing, and overall entertainment), Albert Frost convinced me that his set is the closest thing to sex your ears can possibly get. This guy makes crowds dance to the music and hang on his every word. All without resorting to a backing band.

The latest addition to the Park Acoustics line-up is the Sunset Comedy Stage where, instead of sitting around waiting for the sun to set, some of the best local comedians take a shot at making you laugh. And wow, did they succeed. MC Nqoba Ncobo, Ariel Kegan, Melt Sieberhagen, Eureka Nkese and Deep Fried Man had most of the remaining visitors struggling to breathe between laughs, while DJ Michael Lesar provided a beat inside the fort, for those whose feet weren’t ready to stop dancing yet.

With it’s eclectic but powerful line-up, Park Acoustics yet again proved to be the must-attend event at the end of every month in Pretoria – one of the best and most entertaining ways to spend R80.
